When reading a news story about drug crimes in Greensboro and elsewhere, it is often necessary to treat the allegations with a skeptical eye. This is because such stories are typically written based on information provided by the police, who quite understandably wish to present themselves in as favorable a light as possible. That may be the case for one North Carolina woman who is now facing drug charges.
The 25-year-old woman is purportedly the owner of a day-care center that she operated out of her west Charlotte home. However, this information may prove to be incorrect. A local news station asked neighbors about the day-care center, but no one ever saw any kids in her house, much less witnessed any parents dropping their kids off. That could very well mean that the woman no longer runs a day-care, and that this tidbit of information was released by police in order to make the charges against her seem worse.
In her case, police allegedly found cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia in her car during a recent traffic stop. However, the amounts of these various substances were not divulged, and such information could be very important. According to the young woman's father, she is claiming that these drugs were not hers. If the amounts of the narcotics and illegal material were relatively small, then that increases the likelihood that the items the police found truly did not belong to her.
Police have also charged the woman with having an open container of alcohol and for using a dwelling to keep or sell controlled substances.
Unfortunately, as Greensboro residents may be well aware, the playing field may be tilted against this young woman as attorneys for the state seek to prosecute their case against her. In order to ensure a fair trial and that her rights are not violated, she should consider consulting with professionals who are familiar North Carolina criminal law. Effective legal assistance may be able to put forward a robust and aggressive defense with an aim toward a reduction or dismissal of charges.
